COTTONWOOD HEIGHTS — A fire severely damaged a Cottonwood Heights home and killed two dogs on Monday.
Fire crews responded about 4:30 p.m. to 7345 Winesap Circle and found the garage fully involved with large plumes of black smoke billowing in the air, Unified Fire spokesman Ryan Love said.
The homeowner, and only occupant home at the time, had been evacuated from the fire after a neighbor alerted him to the flames, Cottonwood Heights police said.
Firefighters took defensive action against the garage, spraying water on exterior flames.
The fire spread to the home’s deck in the backyard and the attic inside. Both the deck and garage were a total loss and much of the home’s interior saw severe smoke and fire damage, Love said.
Two dogs in the basement of the home died in the incident, likely from smoke inhalation, Love said.
Investigators were on scene Monday working to figure out the fire’s cause.
