SALT LAKE CITY — Formal charges were filed Friday against a man accused of participating in the kidnapping and torture of another man in April.
Cano Fawson, 23, of Salt Lake City, was charged in 3rd District Court with aggravated kidnapping and aggravated robbery, both first-degree felonies. He is now listed in court documents as a co-defendant along with 37-year-old Patrick Shipley.
According to charging documents, on April 16, Fawson, Shipley and two other people yet to be identified “robbed, beat and tortured” a man in a room at the All Star Motel, 754 W. North Temple. The victim’s mouth was duct taped shut, his feet were duct taped together, his head was shaved and his skin was burned, the charges state.
Police were alerted to what was happening when the victim was able to escape and was found running naked along I-15. The man was “covered in blood, and had scrapes, welts and burn marks on his upper body, back and arms,” the charges state.
The man refused to identify his alleged attackers, however, telling police “they will find me,” according to charging documents.
Shipley, 37, was arrested the next day. He was later charged with aggravated kidnapping and aggravated robbery, both first-degree felonies. A preliminary hearing is scheduled to begin Aug. 14.
Fawson was arrested Wednesday. Prosecutors have requested Fawson be held on $250,000 bond.
