ROY — Separate officer-involved shootings on Saturday left one man dead, another in critical condition and a police dog injured.

At about 2 a.m. Saturday, police stopped a vehicle for unspecified traffic violations, according to a Roy Police Department news release, but after a brief discussion, the two male occupants fled the scene. The release said police pursued the vehicle briefly, then ended their chase.

Roy police learned the vehicle they were after had stopped in a large field near 2640 N. 1700 West in Clinton, according to the release, and when officers approached they were shot at by one of the suspects and returned fire. The release said one suspect is deceased and another is in custody, but their names are not yet being released.

A police dog named Mik had surgery Saturday afternoon after being struck in the face by gunfire during the shootout, police said. Saturday evening, the Roy police Facebook page indicated that Mik would be OK.

“He will be out of work for at least six weeks and be re-evaluated at that time,” Roy police said. The police thanked the public for support and said they would keep everyone updated on the German shepherd’s condition.

The windshield of a Roy police vehicle was also damaged.

Police said officers involved have been placed on administrative leave and the incident is under investigation, including how many officers fired their weapons. The Weber County Attorney’s Office and Davis County Attorney’s Office have taken over the investigation.

Then at about 12:15 p.m., Unified police in Millcreek and Holladay were called to a parking structure, located near 3210 E. 6200 South, where a man believed to be suicidal was said to be armed. After negotiating with the 39-year-old man for 30 minutes, shots were fired and the man was taken to a hospital in critical condition. No officers were injured, according to Unified police.

An investigation into that officer-involved shooting has already begun. No other information about the incident was released Saturday.
