BOUNTIFUL — A man who police say was armed with a rifle, a bow and arrow, and a knife near a high school was shot and killed by police Tuesday night.
The incident happened just before 10:30 p.m. at Viewmont High School. Officers received a single 911 call reporting a suspicious man near the front of the school, said Bountiful Police Lt. Dave Edwards. Officers arrived and started searching the area and they came across a man sitting behind a large tree.
As soon as the man saw the officers, he sat up and grabbed his shotgun, Edwards said.
“Officers gave orders to the suspect to drop his gun. The male responded by asking the officers to shoot him. Officers repeatedly attempted to deescalate the situation. When the suspect raised and fired the shotgun, officers fired, striking the suspect,” according to a statement from Bountiful police.
Edwards said officers immediately rendered aid to the 27-year-old Bountiful man, but he died from his injuries. No officers were injured. The man’s name was not released Wednesday.
Edwards said multiple shots were fired. The shootout was captured on officers’ body cameras and will be turned over to the Davis County Critical Incident Protocol Team as part of its officer-involved critical incident investigation.
Because of the shooting, Viewmont High delayed the start of school by two hours. The school also had to replace two 8-by-10-foot panes of glass damaged by gunfire.
