PLEASANT GROVE — Some residents of Pleasant Grove were told to boil their water Saturday evening after samples tested positive for E. coli.

The boil order was in effect for those in the Monson water service area, officials said in a statement. Additional tests performed Saturday came back negative for coliform bacteria, but the boil order will remain in effect until at least late Monday morning, officials said.

“We have analyzed the entire system and believe this incident is isolated specifically to this service area and even more specifically to the area around 300 North and 300 East based upon the data we have available so far,” city officials said.

Residents in the area were cautioned to boil their water for three minutes before using it to drink, make ice, brush teeth, wash dishes and prepare food.

“Microbes in these wastes can cause diarrhea, cramps, nausea, headaches, or other symptoms. They may pose a special health risk for infants, young children, some of the elderly and people with severely compromised immune systems,” officials said, urging those who experience those symptoms, if they persist, to seek medical advice.

On Wednesday, a sample collected in the Monson area tested positive for coliform bacteria, officials said. One of three samples taken the following day tested positive for E. coli. As tests for E. coli take three days, the results were returned to the city Saturday morning, officials said.

“We have been working throughout the day to investigate the source, flushing the system in the area of concern, conduct additional sampling activities, and notify those residents directly impacted by the initial test results,” officials said.

The source of the contamination was not know.
