When a fire along I-80 in Parleys Canyon broke out Saturday afternoon, Deseret News photojournalist Scott G Winterton jumped into action.

The fire, which was ignited by hot particles thrown from a vehicle’s poorly working catalytic converter, forced the evacuation of the Summit Park and Pinebrook communities, as well as the Timberline subdivision. Nearby Lambs Canyon and Millcreek Canyon were also evacuated.

The fire was 10% contained Monday morning, after air and ground crews worked to protect more than 6,000 homes still under evacuation order. Evacuations remained in effect Monday for the approximately 6,000 to 8,000 homes in the area that were threatened by the blaze.

Crews said Saturday the fire had grown to 2,500-3,000 acres, but said Sunday it was closer to 1,500 acres. However, the Great Basin team on Monday said the fire is now mapped at 539 acres.
