A look back at local, national and world events through Deseret News archives.

On Jan. 26, 2020, NBA legend Kobe Bryant, his 13-year-old daughter Gianna and seven others were killed when their helicopter plunged into a steep hillside in dense morning fog in Southern California; the former Lakers star was 41.

Just five years ago.

A family, in fact several families, saw their lives shattered that day. The memories of the accident are still raw. The pain will only lessen with time.

But looking back, there are so many good memories of Kobe, the NBA superstar, as well as his daughter and the others who died that day.
