On Jan. 29, 1995, the San Francisco 49ers became the first team in NFL history to win five Super Bowl titles, beating the San Diego Chargers, 49-26, in Super Bowl XXIX.
Wow, has it been 30 years since the 49ers last hoisted the Vince Lombardi Trophy?

Utahns and BYU fans remember the game well as Steve Young, the Hall of Fame quarterback out of BYU, had a record-setting performance while leading the 49ers to the title. After winning two Super Bowl rings with the 49ers as the team’s backup, he made his first Super Bowl start against the Chargers and, three plays into the game, he threw a 44-yard touchdown pass to Jerry Rice.
Deseret News stories report Young ended up throwing six touchdown passes that day, setting a Super Bowl record that still stands, while completing 24 of 36 passes for 325 yards.
He also ran for 49 yards on five carries. He was named Super Bowl MVP the same season he was named the NFL MVP.
That San Francisco squad was dominating. Former BYU offensive lineman Bart Oates, who had won two Super Bowl rings with the New York Giants, was a key member of the squad.
The head coach was former University of Utah linebacker/guard George Seifert, who was the head coach at Westminster College at the start of his long coaching career.
A key player for the Chargers was former South High School, Dixie College and Weber State standout tight end Alfred Pupunu.
