A human-caused fire estimated at just 89 acres in Utah County is now 100% contained, fire officials said Friday.

The blaze, dubbed the Milrace Fire, sparked Thursday afternoon in a field near the 1400 North exit on I-15 in Springville.

The fire burned in marshy terrain and phragmites, which the conditions made it difficult for fire crews to access. No structures or homes were threatened.

At one point, the fire put a thick cloud of black smoke could be seen billowing over the southbound lanes of I-15, and flames were visibly burning in vegetation on the west side of the freeway. Smoke from the fire was impacting visibility on I-15, according to Utah Fire Info.

Just before 8:30 p.m., Thursday officials said the cooler evening temperatures and higher humidity reduced fire activity. People in the area may see smoke and occasional flames throughout the night, but crews plan to monitor the blaze and will reassess on Friday morning, Utah Fire Info said.
