Traditional honors at Historic Fort Douglas full of tribute and remembrance

Salt Lake Cit’s Fort Douglas hosted its traditional Memorial Day pageantry on Monday under sunny skies and bright colors.
The Association of the United States Army hosted activities at the Historic Fort Douglas. Events included Memorial Marchers, Boy Scouts and a bagpipe procession with the colors.
Following a patriotic speech, a wreath was laid at the cemetery commemorating the sacrifice of the service members who have paid with their lives.

The headstone of Army Pvt. Lee Shipman on Monday, May 25, 2026, at Fort Douglas Post Cemetery in Salt Lake City. Shipman enlisted in the Colored Volunteer Army near the end of the Civil War in 1865 as an "enlisted recruited slave."
