Last Saturday, a father captured the moment his son was swallowed by a humpback whale, just off the coast of Chile — and then quickly spat him out.

Adrián Simancas and his father, Dell, went kayaking in Bahía El Águila, according to The Associated Press, when his father was filming him from just a short distance away.

The video shows the terrifying moment: A humpback whale surfaced and swallowed Adrián, before quickly spitting him back out.

During the event, Dell stayed calm and continued filming, while also reassuring his son to stay calm after he emerged from the animals mouth.

“Stay calm, stay calm,” can be heard from Dell as he made his way over to his son.

“I thought I was dead,” Adrián told The Associated Press. “I thought it had eaten me, that it had swallowed me.”

After he emerged, Adrián was worried that something would happen to his father or that he would suffer from hypothermia, according to CBS.

But after only a few moments, Dell was able to reach and assist his son and both were able to make it to shore unharmed.

The Strait of Magellan — where the father and son duo were kayaking — is located 1,600 miles south of Chile’s capital, Santiago, and is a known adventure spot for tourists.

Despite it being summertime in the Southern Hemisphere, according to The Associated Press, the temperatures in this region remain cool. The waters get as low as 39 degrees Fahrenheit and rarely exceed 68 degrees Fahrenheit.

According to CBS, it’s extremely uncommon for whales to attack humans in Chilean water. But an increasing number of whales have died when colliding with cargo ships over the years.
