Saving bees one sniff at a time

Maple, the English springer spaniel, used to work in law enforcement until an injury forced her to retire. Now she’s the queen bee among researchers at Michigan State University, helping to detect danger to honeybees. Michigan State’s Pollinator Performance Center is working with Maple’s handler to train her sensitive nose to uncover the American foulbrood bacteria among honeybee larvae. It’s similar to how dogs train to sniff out narcotics or explosives.
