The dictionary isn't dead yet. It's growing

For the first time in 22 years, Merriam-Webster is coming out with a new version of its “Collegiate” dictionary and it’s getting a full makeover plus some 5,000 new words, word lists and word histories. How’d they make room for all the new stuff? The dictionary will no longer include things like biographical and geographical information for people and places. And some antiquated and obscure words got the ax.
