Defying limits: Once overweight, cyclist now rides insane distances
A former marathon runner who qualified for the Boston Marathon at the Ogden Marathon in 2023 found a new path after injury forced him to stop running. In this video, endurance cyclist Matthew Lefthand explains how overuse injuries and an old ankle injury left him searching for a way to stay active. After hopping on a mountain bike in his garage, he discovered cycling allowed him to train without pain — and quickly fell in love with the sport.
What started as casual riding soon turned into extreme endurance challenges. Lefthand went on to complete long-distance rides across multiple states and compete in ultracycling events such as Race Across the West, where he broke a record that had stood for more than a decade. Guided by his personal motto, “No Limits Left,” Lefthand shares how mental strength, positive self-talk and pushing beyond perceived limits helped shape his journey.
