The federal government updated the guidelines Friday that regulate the operation of the Colorado River’s largest reservoirs.
The government order includes mandated water cutbacks in California, Arizona and Nevada and comes as both Lake Powell and Lake Mead have hit record lows, according to the Interior Department.
The decision follows weeks of discussions about the Colorado River — a critical water source for seven states.
Joining the “Deseret Voices” podcast, Arizona State water law professor Rhett Larson likens the fight around the water in the Colorado River to bickering between siblings at the dinner table.
Larson says “it’s not just about pumps and pipes, it’s about respect and about relationships.”
On this episode of “Deseret Voices,” Larson chats with Jane Clayson Johnson about how to manage the battle over this precious commodity.
