Grand Canyon Flash Flood Kills at Least 2; About 15 Remain Missing
At least two people are dead and about 15 remain unaccounted for after a flash flood tore through Bright Angel Canyon on Saturday, the National Park Service said. Sixty-two people were evacuated, many by helicopter, after rangers determined trails were too dangerous to hike out. The flooding destroyed nearly all footbridges along Bright Angel Creek and severed the canyon's only water pipeline, forcing officials to close rim lodges to tourists and impose emergency water restrictions. Forecasters warned Monday that additional storms could bring more flooding. Phantom Ranch, the North Kaibab Trail and other inner canyon areas remain closed with no reopening date.
