Gustav Hasford, who was nominated for an Academy Award for co-writing the screenplay for the movie "Full Metal Jacket," was sentenced to six months in jail and five years probation Wednesday for stealing almost 800 library books. Hasford originally had been charged with grand theft but arranged to plead guilty to possession of stolen property from nine libraries around the country. The judge in Santa Barbara also fined Hasford $1,100 and ordered him to pay to ship 748 books back to the nine libraries and one individual. He was initially charged with stealing more than 1,000 books, worth about $20,000, from 63 libraries. Hasford's collection was discovered last March when university police officers at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo searched his rented storage locker for some missing books and found about 10,000 volumes.
