A Comoran political opposition group Wednesday accused French mercenaries of being behind the assassination of Ahmed Abdallah Abderemane, the president of the Indian Ocean island nation, and urged France to intervene.
Members of the National Union for the Democracy of Comoros, the main Comoros opposition group, said Bob Denard, a former mercenary and head of the Comoros presidential guard, was behind Abdallah's assasination Monday."It has become clear that the Comorans are being held hostage by mercenaries led by Bob Denard and his companion Marques who, according to all the information we have received, assassinated President Ahmed Abdallah," union secretary general Mouni Madi said.
Madi urged President Francois Mitterrand to take action against the mercenaries, who he said are "occupying" the island.
