"Kung Fu Master!" though its title obviously implies something else, is a French film about a 40-year-old woman who becomes obsessed in her infatuation for a 14-year-old boy.

Sound provocative? If so you may be interested.

Sound ridiculous? Then you and I fall into the same camp.

The film is meant to be disturbing, and producer-writer-director Agnes Varda ("Vagabond") tells her story in a straight-faced manner that is not at all salacious. It is shown mostly from the woman's viewpoint, and Varda makes no judgments. Apparently we are to believe in the woman's feelings because she has been hurt by the adult world and is attracted to the boy's innocence.

But the film still fails to work because the premise is so absurd and is handled so stiffly, not to mention all the progressive moments that merely multiply its improbabilities.

The performances are good and Varda is not the least bit exploitive of the story, but I never believed any of this nonsense for a moment.

The title, by the way, comes from the boy's obsession with the video game "Kung Fu Master!"
