A DC-9 carrying explosives and other freight on contract for the military took off early Saturday with its cargo door open and crashed after turning back in an attempt to make an emergency landing, killing both people aboard, officials reported.

Both victims worked for a civilian charter service, Evergreen International Airlines, headquartered in McMinnville, Ore., the Federal Aviation Administration reported.A spokeswoman for Evergreen identified the victims as Capt. Gerald "Jack" McCall, 41, of Del City, Okla., and co-pilot Thomas Bill Johnston, 39, of Reno, Nev. She said McCall had been with Evergreen since August 1984 and Johnson since July 1988.
