More than 3,500 students from across the state recently participated in the 1989 Utah State Math Contest held at Brigham Young University.

The contest, which tests the mathematical skills of junior high and high school students, has been growing since its inception more than 10 years ago. This year's contest involved 500 more students than last year's.Scholarships, cash awards and other gifts were presented to the top five performers from each division. Contestants were separated according to grade, with seventh through 12th grades being represented. Each school selected up to 20 top math students to participate in the contest.

Clark Barrett from Waterford School in Provo won the 12th-grade division with the only perfect score in the senior division. He is the son of BYU mathematics professor Wayne Barrett.

Randy Reynolds of Orem High School was the top performer in the 11th-grade division.

The 10th-grade division was won by Andy Evenson from Timpview High School in Provo.

In the junior division, two students from West High School in Salt Lake City finished first in their respective divisions. David Landon tied Eric McPherson of Farmington Junior High School in the ninth-grade division, and Eric Pabst won the seventh-grade division.

Gordon Hopper, from Butler Middle School in Salt Lake City, was the top eighth-grader in the contest. He was the only contestant to get a perfect score in the junior division.

Sponsors of the contest include BYU, the University of Utah, Utah State University, Geneva Steel, Questar and the BYU Bookstore.
