The Utah Transportation Commission has approved spending $4 million to complete the first half of a project to rebuild SR-313 to Dead Horse Point.
"The project will go from the top down," said commission spokesman Kim Morris. "We'll start at the state park boundary and build back" toward U.S. 191 north of Moab.Last year, state Parks and Recreation Division crews rebuilt the portion of the so-called Insland in the Sky Road inside Dead Horse Point State Park, just west of the Colorado River.
The 14.6-mile reconstruction project approved Friday is expected to take two years to complete, said Morris, with the first half this year.
"We'll be tearing out the old road and totally rebuilding it," he said. "The two-lane highway will be widened to include bicycle lanes in both directions and scenic turnouts."
The money to pay for the project comes from federal Public Lands funds, said Morris.
