Glenn McCrory, fighting in his home town, pounded his way to a unanimous decision over Patrick Lumumba of Kenya Saturday to win the vacant International Boxing Federation cruiserweight title.
McCrory, 24, stunned his opponent with a left hook in the opening round of the 12-round fight and never let up against Lumumba, who now lives in New York. The judges, all Americans, scored it 118-110, 116-111 and 118-111 for McCrory in a battle of two men who had been sparring partners for heavyweight champion Mike Tyson.
McCrory, fighting at a 2,000-seat arena within walking distance of his home, used his superior reach to control the fight. There were no knockdowns, but each fighter seemed stunned by his opponent's punches at times during the bout.
McCrory upped his record to 26-5. Lumumba, rated the No. 1 contender even though he had not fought in 14 months, fell to 13-3.
