South Korea, the Olympic gold medalist, swept to an easy victory in the women's team finals at the World Archery championships Saturday.
The Soviet team won the men's competition, 11 points ahead of the United States, which who won the silver medal at the Seoul Olympics last year. The U.S. women's team of Denise Parker, Debra Ochs and Kristin Scwarzkopf could only manage fifth place with a score of 950. Parker and Ochs helped the United States to a bronze medal in the Olympics.
Parker, the bronze medalist in Friday's individual competition, helped to lead the U.S. women through a steady battle throughout the day with the Soviet, Swedish and Indonesian teams. In fact, with only three arrows to go for each of the team members, the U.S. was tied with the Soviet Union and two points ahead of Sweden.
However, the United States finished out by scoring only 75 points out of a possible 90, which dropped the women's team from second to fifth - well out of medal placement.
En route to the women's title, the three South Koreans, led by Soo Nyung Kim, who captured the title in the individual event Friday, won 995 out of a maximum total of 1,080 points.
Second place went to Sweden, 41 points behind the victors, with the Soviet Union finishing third.
The U.S. men's team of Allen Rasor, Jay Barrs and Christopher Yeoman scored a total of 976 points. The second-place finish helped make up for the disappointment in the individual competitions where no Americans made it to the final.
Third place went to South Korea, the gold medalist at Seoul.
