Ivan Lendl of Czechoslovakia used precise passing shots and service returns for a 6-1, 6-3 victory over John McEnroe Sunday and his sixth $900,000 Player's International Canadian Open tennis title in Montreal.

Lendl, the top seed and world's top-ranked player, needed only 1 hour, 12 minutes for his third consecutive Canadian title and the 80th victory of his 12-year career. He also won the Canadian in 1980, 1981 and 1983.

"Today was very encouraging," said Lendl, who returned this week from a six-week break and will go after his fourth U.S. Open title next week in New York. "Winning the tournament after not playing for a while and not playing that well in the first few games, I was happy with that."

Lendl took a 16-15 advantage in career head-to-head matches against McEnroe with the most one-sided victory since McEnroe beat the rangy right-hander by the same score at Brussels in 1984.

He beat Stefan Edberg 6-4, 2-6, 7-6 on Sunday to win the ATP Championship and extend his winning streak to a career-high 17 straight matches, which cover a span of tournament victories at Stratton Mountain, Vt., and Livingston, N.J., before the ATP.

At Mahwah, N.J., more than a couple of forehands went into the net, the backhand wasn't perfect and the drop shots fell short a couple times.

Steffi Graf was human in defeating Andrea Temesvari 7-5, 6-2 to capture her second straight United Jersey Bank Classic on Sunday, and that could raise some questions leading to the U.S. Open in two weeks.
