American Greetings will close its distribution center here, eliminating about 160 jobs, in a move to streamline and consolidate warehouse distribution operations.
The Brigham City plant was built in 1976 as a primary distribution center to improve service to its western states retail accounts."Today, we are taking another step in improved service by adopting state of the art systems and technology for warehousing, order filling and distribution of finished products," president and chief executive officer Morry Weiss said.
Distribution centers at Danville, Kentucky and Osceola and McCrory, Arkansas, where new technology has recently been installed, have the capacity to absorb the western states distribution, although employment levels may increase.
Employees at the Brigham City facility were notified Monday of the closing, to take place in 60 to 90 days.
Employees will be provided with severance pay, career counseling, job referral services and other support necessary to find employment, American Greetings said.
The company will set up an in-house center to work with employees on human resource issues until the closure is completed. The 586,000-square-foot building, which is owned by American Geetings, will be sold or leased.
American Greetings, based in Cleveland, is the world's largest publicly owned manufacturer and distributor of greeting cards and related products, with 1988 gross revenues of $1.2 billion.
