An exhibit by the winners and many of the runners-up in last year's Deseret News-KSL Sterling Scholar Awards program opens Saturday, Sept. 23, at the Bountiful/Davis Art Center.

The display, the first of its kind to exhibit works by Sterling Scholars, opens the center's new season, according to Scott Jensen, BDAC director. It will include sculpture as well as paintings. The winners, representing the state's five regions in the scholastic recognition program, and their high schools are: Nathan Durrant, Highland; Holly Soper, North Sanpete; Jenni Clawson, Morgan; Candacy Miller, Monticello, and Tanya Rizzuti, Pineview.

Runners-up displaying pieces of art include Bee Thao, Layton; David Stevenson, Weber; Kevin Wasden, Millard; Travis Hess, Emery; Joseph Benson, Beaver; Lander Meek, Union; Josey Muse, Wasatch; Shane Adair, Cedar City, and Janet Axtel, Grand County.

The young artists were award-winning high school seniors in visual arts in last spring's statewide Sterling Scholar Awards program. Visual arts is one of 12 categories in the program to recognize scholastic excellence.

"We are happy to be the forum which will exhibit this fine collection of talent. The students are chosen by judges in the program, but the public never gets to see the type of talent these students possess," Jensen said.

"It is exciting for the BDAC to provide this opportunity for these young artists to display their works, and we are excited for the public to experience the art that has come from long hours, much commitment and an incredible amount of talent," he said.

An opening reception will be held Saturday, Sept. 23, between 2 and 6 p.m., and the free exhibit will continue for six weeks. The center is located at 2175 S. Main Street in Bountiful.
