Hugh Ross, the conductor of the choral group Schola Canturum, died early Saturday at his home, his family said. He was 91.

Ross, a noted organist and conductor whose music career spanned 60 years, died at his Manhattan home following a three-month illness, his wife, Ruth, said.An Oxford University graduate, Ross was born in Somerset, England, Aug. 21, 1898 and served in World War I with the British Army, she said. At 17, Ross was the youngest organist to be enrolled in the Royal College of Organist in London.

After leaving England about 1926, Ross founded the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra in Canada before coming to the United States.

In 1985, Ross' Schola Canturum, a group of 100 singers, performed in honor of the Statue of Liberty.
