Lawrence D. Reaveley, vice president of Reaveley Engineers and Associates Inc., Salt Lake City, has been selected as Utah engineer of the Year by the Utah Engineers Council, an award made in conjunction with National Engineer's Week.

Reaveley was selected from among several candidates nominated by several organizations. Selection was based on superior achievement in engineering design, teaching and management, advancement of their respective organizations and service to the community.Carl H. Durney, an electrical engineering professor at the University of Utah, was named engineering educator of the year.

In addition to his full-time job, Reaveley is president of the Applied Technology Council, a non-profit research organization focusing on seismic practice in structural engineering. He has been instrumental in trying to raise the level of citizen awareness to the damage potential of earthquakes.

He has visited San Francisco, Armenia, Mexico City and Challis, Idaho, to study the effects of earthquakes in those areas. He has been involved with structures in Salt Lake City such as the Primary Children's Hospital, the Salt Lake County Government Complex, the Hotel Utah renovation and the proposed Utah Jazz arena.

Reaveley has bachelor's and master's degree from the U. in engineering and has a doctorate in structural engineering from the University of New Mexico. He has engineers' licenses from Utah, Wyoming and New Mexico.

Durney has been a member of the U. faculty since 1963 and was a finalist for the University Distinguished Teaching Award in 1971. He consistently ranks high as a top faculty member.
