Novell Inc., developer of NetWare systems software products, has announced that it has signed an agreement with Dayna Communications to provide LocalTalk adapter solutions for Novell's NetWare for Macintosh.

Dayna Communications' DL2000 will replace Novell's NL1000 LocalTalk adapter, and its DL/2 LocalTalk adapter will take the place of Novell's previously announced NL/2 LocalTalk adapter.Effective immediately, Dayna Communications will assume support for the NL1000 adapter.

"The agreement is in keeping with Novell's strategy to focus our efforts on network system software," said Mark Calkins, vice president of marketing, NetWare products.

"Our goal is to build a high quality network operating system platform and encourage third-party vendors to produce a wide variety of high-quality hardware products that further enhance that platform.

"Because of our relationship with Dayna Communications, which began with the joint development of NetWare for Macintosh, and their DaynaTALK line of Novell-certified LocalTalk adapters, it made sense to have Dayna manufacture and market our LocalTalk adapters."

Together with Dayna Communications' DaynaTALK PC and MC adapters, the DL2000 and DL/2 allow complete access to all NetWare features, including print spooling and administration, over LocalTalk cables.

Novell is also looking into making similar agreements with other vendors to make and sell additional NetWare/LocalTalk adapters so as to provide multiple options for Novell customers.

Novell Inc. is the leading independent provider of open, high-performance systems software products. The company's NetWare network operating system has become a standard for personal computer-based local area networks. Novell had revenues of $422 million for fiscal 1989; its common stock is traded on NASDAQ under the symbol NOVL.
