Tom Gadd, whose name surfaced during the 1988 South Carolina steroid scandal, has been named defensive coordinator at the University of Minnesota.

Gadd, 42, was acquitted by a jury of the two felony counts of encouraging the use of steroids and providing the dangerous muscle-enhancing drug to players."It's a hard thing to go through and I wouldn't want to go through it again, but I don't think there have been any repercussions from it," Gadd said of the steroid flap. "It's a long, complex story, but I was indicted without being questioned. They did a sloppy job and I told my lawyers there would be no deals. The jury voted 12-0 for acquittal on the first ballot."

Gophers coach John Gutekunst, himself a former defensive coordinator, said he was "happy to get a man with Tom Gadd's experience."

Gadd, who also coached at Utah, Long Beach State and California-Riverside, said he will use a swarming attack to improve a defense that ranked ninth in the Big Ten last year.
