Pierre Combescot was awarded France's most prestigious literary prize Monday for his novel "Les Filles du Calvaire," ("Daughters of Matrydom"), the Goncourt Academy announced.

The academy also announced that Dan Franck won the Renaudot Prize for his novel "La Separation."The announcement of the Goncourt prize is a major cultural event in France and guarantees its winner instant success. Last year's winner, "Les Champs d'Honneur" ("Fields of Honor") by Jean Rouaud sold 600,000 hard-cover copies.
