Salt Lake internist Alan R. Nelson will succeed Dr. Joseph F. Boyle as executive vice president of the American Society of Internal Medicine when Boyle retires next March.

The society represents more than 26,000 internists nationwide.Nelson is board certified and is a clinical professor of medicine at the University of Utah. He has practiced internal medicine and endocrinology in Salt Lake City since the early 1960s. Nelson was a member of the American Medical Association Board of Trustees from 1980 to 1991, serving as president from 1989 to 1990.

This month he will be installed as president of the World Medical Association.
