Britain's most famous little patient and his working class parents have thanked America's richest man for arranging the brain surgery that saved the boy's life.

Craig Shergold, an 11-year-old from suburban London, received a record 33 million get-well cards after he was diagnosed as having an incurable brain tumor. Then John Kluge paid Craig's expenses for treatment in this country. Kluge was listed by Forbes magazine last fall as the country's richest man, with an estimated worth of $5.2 billion.

University of Virginia neurosurgeons had hoped to extend Craig's life up to a year with a risky operation March 1. They instead were able to remove nearly all of the egg-size tumor, which turned out to be benign.

"This really is a miracle," Craig's mother, Marion, told Kluge. "And you are our guardian angel."
