Musician Steve Marriott, former lead singer with the Small Faces and Humble Pie whose hits included "Itchycoo Park" and "All or Nothing," died in a fire at his cottage northeast of London, police said Saturday. He was 44.

Marriott, a pop music star in the 1960s, had just returned Friday from a tour with guitarist Peter Frampton of U.S. nightclubs. After a meal with friends, he returned alone to his rented cottage in Saffron Walden, about 50 miles from London in Essex county. His body was found next to his burned-out bed, and police said they suspected he may have fallen asleep while smoking.

Police inspector Martin Reed confirmed the death and issued a statement from Marriott's wife, Toni, that said "we will miss him very much."
