Owners of the Kansas City Comets announced today that the Major Soccer League team will end operations immediately.

The decision came just one day after the Comets announced the addition of a ninth part-time owner. The league had granted the financially ailing club a 17-day extension to solidify its ownership group.Principal owner Herbert Kohn said it was decided there was no point in waiting for the July 31 deadline because the team's divided ownership had not worked.

"Our heads won't let us proceed no matter how much our hearts want to," said Robert Hagans, retired board chairman.
