The Bastille Opera of Paris is bedeviled by serious industrial and technical problems after its first year in operation.

Controversial director Pierre Berge has merged its administration with that of the old opera, the Palais Garnier, which it was intended to supercede. Physical glitches still exist in the new house, programming is accused of being routine and boring, and running expenses are high.
