THE LESSON\ The teacher's objective: Director Michael Murphy feels that traveling with the band is a good experience for the young people. They practice four hours a day for six weeks prior to the trip and then practiced two to three hours while on the road. Playing in the band is great for kids. They not only learn to play a musical instrument, they learn to appreciate good music. Playing in the band helps a student get music scholarships to play in university bands. They make many new friends and learn discipline. "These kids have to be willing to sacrifice and work very, very hard," said Murphy. But, he added, "We had a great time."\ What the children learned: Playing a musical instrument is hard work, but it is also a door to new opportunities. Not only did they visit the northern country, they played nine concerts in five days and marched away with first place in the Gold Rush Competition.
