The Boston Celtics traded guard Brian Shaw to the Miami Heat Friday night for embattled guard Sherman Douglas.
The trade was announced shortly after the Celtics lost to the Minnesota Timberwolves, 104-94. Shaw did not play in the game.In announcing the trade, Celtics executive vice president Dave Gavitt said he expected Douglas would join the team in time for today's game against the New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden, and that Shaw would join the Heat in Chicago for a game against the Bulls the same night.
Douglas, a second-round pick in the 1989 draft out of Syracuse, was a holdout at the beginning of the season and played his first game for the Heat on Jan. 2 after Miami matched a contract offer from the Los Angeles Lakers.
Shaw, the Celtics' top draft pick in 1988 out of Cal-Santa Barbara, left the team after his rookie season to play in Italy. He rejoined the team last season following a court battle over his services. But injuries this season limited him to 17 games, where he averaged 10.3 points a game.
