Stargazer Carl Sagan is the smartest person in the country, according to a vote by readers of Parade magazine. Advised of the results, the astronomer responded with a paradox: "A good definition of intelligence is understanding how little we understand of what there is to know." Gulf war hero Norman Schwarzkopf was No. 2 on the list, followed by columnist William F. Buckley Jr., PBS newsman Bill Moyers and President Bush. No. 6 was consumer advocate Ralph Nader while former President Jimmy Carter was ranked seventh and former Texas congresswoman Barbara Jordan, Henry Kissinger and Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Colin Powell rounded out the top 10.
