Moroni Elementary School was damaged heavily - possibly destroyed - in a fire Sunday night.
School was not held Monday as district officials assessed the damage. The blaze was reported about 6 p.m. and was out at 11 p.m. after four volunteer departments responded to the call - Moroni, Fountain Green, Ephraim and Mt. Pleasant.
The cause of the fire has not been determined and state fire inspectors were expected on the scene Monday.
The faculty room and kindergarten area sustained major damage and there also was extensive smoke damage in several classrooms. The North Sanpete School District Board of Education and school officials were meeting Monday to arrange for temporary quarters for the school.
The district has two options: repair the building or build a new one.
Courtney Syme, principal at North Sanpete High School in nearby Mt. Pleasant, observed the scene Sunday night with his father-in-law, Francis Black, who had been principal at the elementary school for 33 years.
Black was interested in what happened to the building because of his longtime association with it, Syme said.
"By about 10:40 p.m., the fire crews had it under control," Syme said. "It looked to me like the structure was still intact. There was a lot of smoke and steam at that time."
Syme said the faculty room apparently had been remodeled about 10 years ago and previously was a kitchen. The area is located in the middle of the building.
Syme estimated the school serves between 260 and 300 children in kindergarten through fifth grade.
