Services will be held at noon Thursday at the Cathedral Church of St. Mark for longtime University of Utah coach Pete Carlston.

Carlston, 81, died Monday after a brief illness. His coaching career at the university spanned three decades.He was head coach of track and field, golf and swimming and served as a line coach for the football team.

His baseball team in 1951 won the conference and district titles and finished in a tie for third in the College World Series.

Carlston was a standout end for the Utes. After graduation, he coached at two Utah high schools and at Mesa Junior College, Grand Junction, Colo.

He served in the Navy, reaching the rank of commander, before beginning his long career at the U. He retired in 1979.
