Five months of separation didn't save the marriage of pioneering sex researchers Masters and Johnson. Virginia Johnson, 67, filed for divorce this week in St. Louis County, Mo., saying her 21-year marriage to William Masters, 76, was "irretrievably broken."
The couple had separated in mid-January and a spokesman at their Masters & Johnson Institute said Johnson wanted to spend more time with family and friends while Masters continues to devote most of his time to his work. The couple met in 1957 when Masters hired Johnson as a psychologist to help him research human sexuality and they married in 1971. The Masters and Johnson books include "Human Sexual Response," "Human Sexual Inadequacy" and "The Pleasure Bond."
