The man charged in the 1990 slayings of five Gainesville college students tried to kill himself in his prison cell, a Corrections Department spokeswoman said in Miami.

Danny Rolling, 37, attempted suicide June 1 by wrapping a bedsheet around his neck and twisting it like a tourniquet, spokeswoman Paula Bryant said.A nearby inmate alerted guards, she said.

The Louisiana drifter pleaded not guilty earlier this week to five first-degree murder charges in the student slayings. He is serving a life sentence as a habitual offender in a string of robberies.
