The largest Olympics in history ended with an appeal to the athletes that they cherish their memories from the Old World city of Barcelona and gather again in four years amid the 21st-century atmosphere of Atlanta. In a moving ceremony, the flame that was given life at Olympia in Greece two months ago and then borne to the host city was extinguished - the light growing dimmer until darkness remained. The United States finished the Games with 108 medals, 37 of which were gold.
