From the way CBS has been shifting its schedule, you'd think the network was in last place, not first.
Already this seasons the Big Eye has canceled "The Trouble with Larry," "Tall Hopes" and "Angels Falls."Now CBS is sending a couple of shows on hiatus, bringing on a midseason replacement and bringing back one of last season's programs.
Two new Friday sitcoms - Faye Dunaway's "It Had to Be You" and the family comedy "Family Album," will be back eventually.
In their place, for the time being, will be Dick Van Dyke's "Diagnosis Murder," which will take over the Friday at 7 p.m. time slot as of Oct. 29. Van Dyke plays a crime-solving doctor - the same character he's portrayed in several made-for-TV movies.
A retooled "Hearts Afire" will return on Wednesday, Oct. 27, with an hourlong premiere. The John Ritter-Markie Post comedy has gone through a number of changes - the setting has changed from Washington D.C. to a small, Southern town and the pair will be running a small newspaper.
The following week (Wednesday, Nov. 3), the promising new sitcom "The Nanny" will begin airing after "Hearts" at 7:30 p.m.
CBS has also confirmed its earlier plans to bring back retooled versions of "Good Advice" and "Bob" on Friday, Oct. 22, at 8 and 8:30 p.m., respectively.
And "South of Sunset," a detective show starring former Eagles member Glenn Frey, will debut on Wednesday, Oct. 27, at 8 p.m.
MORE RENEWALS: ABC has ordered an additional nine episodes of two of its new shows.
The pickup orders for "Phenom" and "NYPD Blue" bring both shows to a full season's worth of episodes - 22.
BABY ON BOARD: "Roseanne" fans may have noticed that we're seeing a bit more of sister Jackie this season because the actress who plays her, Emmy-winner Laurie Metcalf, is pregnant.
It's been fairly obvious to even the casual viewer. And next week (Oct. 19), this development will be written into the script as Jackie, too, learns she's pregnant.
It'll cause a bit of an uproar because the married (fictional) Roseanne is trying unsuccessfully to have a baby and her unmarried sister, who wasn't trying, succeeds.
THE VAN HALENS: Rock star Eddie Van Halen will make an appearance on his wife's (Valerie Bertinelli) sitcom "Cafe Americain" on Nov. 6.
He'll play an obnoxious street guitarist who annoys Holly (Bertinelli).
