Art Garfunkel says Paul Simon is his friend for life, even though his former singing and songwriting partner hurt him by diminishing his role through the years.

Among other things, Simon erased Garfunkel's vocals from the 1983 "Hearts and Bones" disc that was intended to be a reunion record."I would like to have augmented Paul's contributions with mine, to the max. I would like to have gone all the way to adding appeal, harmony, accessiblity and general star quality to Paul's vocals. With a great harmony sound, really sung well, that does not hurt what the lyric is about and augments the song."

The pair, in Toronto this weekend for a United Way fund-raising show, still fight over what tunes to do.

"If the dueling is about what we honestly think is best, then that sort of duel has a productive element to it, as long as it doesn't hurt us, as long as we still have respect for each other," Garfunkel said.
