Utah Symphony bass player Jamie Allyn will present a recital at 3 p.m. today in Nunemaker Place on the Westminster College campus. Included on the free program will be Hindemith's Sonata for Double Bass and Piano (with Barlow Bradford at the keyboard), the Konzertstueck of Emmanuel Storch and arrangements of pieces by Bach and Haydn.
In addition mezzo-soprano Lani Poulson will sing songs of Glinka and Tchaikovsky.- THE LAS VEGAS-BASED Desert Chorale will perform at 6 this evening in the Temple Square Assembly Hall. Under their director, Nancy Musgrove, the 60-voice community choir will sing three John Rutter carols and arrangements by Robert Cundick, Mack Wilberg, Peter Wilhousky and Martin Green.
At 8 tonight, also in the Assembly Hall, the Salt Lake Symphonic Choir will offer a program of holiday music ranging from "O Come, O Come Emmanuel" and Bruckner's "Ave Maria" to Irving Berlin's "White Christmas" and "The Christmas Song." Joseph R. Casperson will conduct, with accompaniment by Gwenivere Jones and Susan Newland.
Admission to each is free, but limited to those 8 and older.
- THE ROCKY MOUNTAIN Children's Choir will present a selection of Christmas music through the ages at 6 this evening at the Hale Center Theatre, 2801 S Main. The newly formed choir is led by Dolores D. Huff, with Syndie Lambert as accompanist. Admission is free.
- COLORS OF THE BAROQUE will perform music from the Renaissance and baroque eras this evening at 8 at the Cathedral of the Madeleine.
Directed by trumpeter Nick Norton, the group will be heard in concertos of Molter, Vivaldi, Corelli and Telemann (the Violin-and-Trumpet Concerto), with guest violinist Carla Moore among the soloists. A Salt Lake native, she has performed with Tafelmusik, the Boston Early Music Festival Orchestra and the London Classical Players.
Other soloists include bass Judd Sheranian (in "The Trumpet Shall Sound" from Handel's "Messiah") and violinists Lynnette Thredgold, Shannon Hanks, John Englund and Teresa Hicks. Also featured will be pieces by Giovanni Gabrieli.
There is no charge for admission.
- UTAH REGIONAL BALLET runs close to Christmas with its "Nutcracker," in Brigham Young University's Harris Fine Arts Center in Provo, with Clyn Barrus conducting the symphony orchestra.
Performances are at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 21, 22 and 23, with matinees at 5:30 p.m. Dec. 20 and 2 p.m. Dec. 22. Tickets for matinees are $8, evenings $9, with a $1 discount for BYU students and faculty and other groups. Call the music ticket office (378-HFAC) or 1-800-34DANCE.
The URB "Nutcracker" is choreographed by artistic director Jacqueline P. Colledge, with costumes by Sarah B. Price and scenic design by Bill Kirkpatrick. The production's 120 dancers will feature guest artists Michael Onstad as Drosselmeier, and Joseph Woelfel, Chen Xiao of Atlanta Ballet and Jiang Qi of Ballet West, who will alternate as the Snow Prince and Cavalier.
- BALLET WEST continues its run of Willam Christensen's "The Nutcracker" with performances in the Capitol Theatre nightly at 7 Dec. 20-23 and Dec. 27-30 and matinees Dec. 22-23, 27-31 at 2 p.m. Santa's matinee is Dec. 24 at noon.
Artists of Ballet West alternate in leading roles, assisted by four alternate children's casts. Terence Kern conducts the Utah Chamber Orchestra in the beloved Tchaikovsky score.
Tickets ranging from $10-$35 are available at the Capitol Theatre box office or at Albertson's ArtTix outlets (355-ARTS). Sugar Plum parties will be hosted by company dancers and personnel backstage after the matinees of Dec. 18 and 27-30. Admission is $7. Proceeds benefit a special Salt Lake Ballet Guild scholarship for the Ballet West Conservatory.
- THE EARLY-MUSIC GROUP Musica Reservata will present "The Royall Feaste - A Musical Banquet" Tuesday, Dec. 21, at 8 p.m. at All Saints Episcopal Church, 1710 S. Foothill Drive.
Featured will be "courses" made up of medieval religious songs, Tudor favorites, 16th-century French court dances, hearty Germanic fare and "dessert" selections of Christmas music. Accompanying soprano Cheryl Hart and tenor Randall Smith will be the period sounds of lute, harpsichord, krummhorns, viols, sackbut and recorders, with narration by Ben Norton.
Tickets are $7 ($5 students), at the door.
