The man who guides Salt Lake City's late-night basketball program now will coordinate a multifaceted approach to solving problems of youth gangs and delinquency.
Michael Andrews will become the city's first director of youth relations. Mayor Deedee Corradini announced the appointment and the creation of the new title Thursday.She said Andrews will evaluate the many suggestions the mayor's office receives for solving gang crime, and he will implement the ones that have merit. He also will serve as a liaison between the city and the Salt Lake City School District, as well as with those who run existing state and county programs.
Andrews has been an administrative assistant to Corradini for 15 months. One of his duties was to oversee the late-night basketball program, which attempts to integrate gang members with corporate sponsors, coaches and others dedicated to helping them succeed.
