William Edwin Berrett, 91, former administrator of LDS Church seminaries and institutes and a vice president of Brigham Young University, died Nov. 30, 1993, in a Provo hospital.
Mr. Berrett's career in the church education system spanned more than four decades. He had been a seminary teacher and principal for 20 years before his appointment as a church adminis-tra-tor in 1953. In 1965, that post was changed to the administrator of seminaries and institutes of religion, a position he held until 1970.Dr. Berrett received a LLB degree and doctor of law degree from the University of Utah and an honorary doctor of law degree from BYU. He served as vice president of BYU in charge of religious education, vice administrator of church schools from 1953 to 1964 and was a professor of religious education at BYU for eight years.
He directed the seminary and institute programs during the period of their greatest expansion and was the author of many church books and lesson manuals. He was perhaps best known for the book, "The Restored Church," but had written or co-authored numerous other publications.
Dr. Berrett began his work in the church education system as a principal at Roosevelt Seminary. He had also taught seminary or had been a principal for a number of others, including the Granite, West and Kanab seminaries.
He was a member of the Sunday School General Board, a counselor in the East Mill Creek Stake presidency and second counselor in the presidency of the Fairbanks Alaska Branch. He was Edgemont North Stake patriarch at the time of his death.
Funeral will be at noon Saturday in the Edgemont North Stake Center, 4300 N. Canyon Road, Provo. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Berg Mortuary, 185 E. Center, Provo, and one hour before services at the stake center Saturday. Burial will be in the Provo City Cemetery.
